Why Are You Here?

There are millions and millions of blogs in the blogosphere. Sometimes I cannot help but wonder - what makes someone choose to read a person's blog but not another?

What drives people to a blog? Controversy? Sexcapades? Tragedies? Love stories? Politically incorrect verbal diarrhoea? Dirty secrets?

Why do some even bother to read about other people's lives? What motivates them to log on every day, hungrily devouring each and every printed word published by the author?

What goes through each reader's mind, as their eyes splayed over the screen?

How do they feel being let in on the lives of someone they hardly know, except for the virtual persona that the blogger paints online?

I read some people's blog for a few reasons. The most practical one would be because that blogger happens to read my blog, and out of blogger's etiquette, I feel obligated to return the favour. But yet I am selective - I don't read ALL blogs. Scarcity of time simply means I have to filter out the more quality ones to read.

I like reading blogs also because it gives me an insight into another person's mind. It's interesting to know the kind of random thoughts that get translated into verbal diarrhoea. The more complicated a person's thoughts are, the more intrigued I get. I am curious what made him/her the way they are. What moulded their life perceptions? Bloggers like these inspire me.

Strong command of the language definitely helps - because I love to learn and muse at the different styles of good writing. But being a good writer is not enough to command my attention. The blogger must have its own brand of persona and attitude, a character that is distinctive in its own special way.

Few bloggers possess that. So I only read those that I link on my blog. The rest are really a waste of my time.

I feel very much for people, and they are usually the main source of my inspiration. Being a blogger myself, I do feel a sense of unspoken affinity towards other fellow bloggers. But again, this affinity is usually reserved for a selected few. Such exclusivity confers a kind of special status to these people that I hold high regard for. Simply because what they have written have either impressed me, touched me, or inspired me - in their own li'l ways.

That's just moi.

What about you, the one who is reading this entry right now? I am curious about you - especially at this point in my blog - where I feel you would probably know more about me than I would ever know about you.

1) Why do you read my blog? How do you know about this blog?
2) How often do you read it?
3) What motivates you to read it again?
4) What kind of impression have you formed after reading it?
5) Has my blog influenced, affected, inspired, changed, traumatized, touched you in any way? If yes, how? If no, why not?

Five simple questions - and hopefully I will get five truthful, honest, and no-holds barred answers from you.

At least for once, let me know who you are - since I have bared my heart and soul to all of you for so long.

1) Why do you read my blog? How do you know about this blog?

I came across it by random blog hopping.

Whatever I read that fateful day motivated me to leave a comment. By serendipity, you commented back at my blog.

I do not bookmark blogs I visit, so unless I get a visit back, that blog is lost (unless I happen to randomly stumble on it again). So, your comment allowed me to visit back.

For some reason I continued to comment and gradually began to feel welcome.

2) How often do you read it?

Two times a day. (1) when I get into work in the morning. (2) at lunch time (I might hit it a few times around lunch, if I am following comments, since it seems a lot of activity occurs around this time - my lunch time, not yours - don't you guys ever sleep?

3) What motivates you to read it again?

I have developed an affinity for your writings and, I suppose, for you. I like to know what you are up to these days ;-)

4) What kind of impression have you formed after reading it?

That you are an interesting and in some ways complicated person.

You are also intelligent and literate. I think you would be a great person to go out with, have a few coffees and discuss deep and intimate thoughts with.

5) Has my blog influenced, affected, inspired, changed, traumatized, touched you in any way? If yes, how? If no, why not?

This question is hard to answer. I am more affected by your visiting my blog. Thus making me feel that my random musings are, from time to time, worthwhile to someone.

After all, isn't that what we all want, to know that we mean something to someone? That someone, somewhere enjoys our companionship.

I agree with all the sentiments you have expressed (except the part about it being verbal diarrhoea). There must be something, some reciprocity, some affinity, some sense of kinship. Perhaps even vulnerability.

Perhaps it is your humanness, without being a complainer; your thoughts without venom. (Lack of profanity also helps).

You might as well ask me why some people become friends and why some don't. Need, availability, and reciprocity are important ingredients.

Take care.

Just occured to me that you could have done a modified prisoner opening:

Who are you?

What do you want?

Whose side are you on?

I came across your blog via your post in fmslist about the Kelong. As I have an interest in things to do in Singapore and in general, I was quite intrigued. Anyone who can recommend a something like a kelong trip is good in my books!

So, I subscribed to your blog feed. This means I read it every time you update! No lah, I will read the post if something of interest catches my eye.

I've not trawled through your past posts but from the little I've read so far, you seem like an interesting and thoughtful person. And, unlike most blogs, you carry on the conversation in your comments, which is the essence of blogging.

Something which the MSM fails to come to terms with.

Your post about the Kelong was inspirational. Your I am sorry was raw and deeply personal. Yet you posted it. I admire that.

On a less serious note. Wah, you only read those blogs that you link to! I'm not so discriminating. So, I've added your blog to blog links on my site. Perhaps I will qualify for to be linked on your blog based on your discerning and stringent criteria. =)

Oh! Thanks to your reading your blog, I have a new template.

1.
Because i'm jealous that you look significantly younger than you are actually. Hah!
No, actually i'm intrigued by your thoughts, how you percieved the world around you and your strong hold of the language. Being a gorgeous lady you are, helps too!
Stumbled from the lads from FK Forum.

2. A recommended dose of 4 times daily.

3. Because words are the ones that tingle my soft spot.

4. Of you or your blog? If i were to generalize everything into one, you're one helluva sentimental lady. Of love and relationships, you treasure and you lost. Of life, you are making the most out of it. Of svelte words, you have me wanting for more.

5. Let's take things one at a time ya? It's too early to tell. ;)

Angel: Thank you for dropping by. Hope you will continue to enjoy your stay here in Hotel Solace, even after your project. :)

Richard: You are one of my most cherished online friends because you have always been honest, true and supportive of me, someone who is merely a virtual friend. Appreciate your frank comments every time because they make me think... :) And yes, your random musings do mean something - whether it is here or in your blog. Don ever stop writing.

Dave: You are more than welcome to Hotel Solace. Thanks for reading my blog, and I am glad you like my musings.

And yes, I like designing my blog. It gives me the identity that I wanna portray. Or brand persona. Everything here including the categories by the side bar, speaks of my personality and character.

Don't have to feel like an intruder. The very fact that I put up my thoughts and feelings online, means that I am ready to share with anyone who is willing to read. So do enjoy the read while you are here.

Pinto: Thanks for being here too. You should go for the kelong trip sometimes. It's quite therapeutic haha. And I am glad that I have inspired you to do something for your blog. Hope I can continue to do that. :)

Luvphobia: Thank you for the comments. You are quite an insightful and intelligent person yourself, an underrated one too if I may add. :)

4 times daily? Wow.

Virgin: You write really well too. Your command of the Chinese language left me in awe. Totally impressed. Thanks for being here...even though I know you have been extremely busy.

Don't forget to keep your chin up! Somehow I can feel it in my bones that you are going to do quite well. :)

What the hell is a "closet bohemian" anyway?

1. You left a comment on somebody's blog. I saw your photo, and thought I should visit this pretty gal's blog to read more about the person behind that face.
2. Whenever there is an update. I leave the page on the desktop permanently and refresh it as and when I was told there is an update.
3. To find out more about whatever you choose to reveal.
4. You are an easily hurt gal, like that song: 一个容易受伤的女人.
5. It has affected and traumatized me a lot. For one, I am suffering from sleep deprivation because of your blog! hahaha.

I only have one answer for u, elvina:

I read your blog because someone told me u r just like me. When i first read your blog, i begin to see that u r truly my 'miror'. But as i read more, i see the 'distortion' of this 'image'... yes, i could feel everything u wrote, but i handle things very differently from u... here lies the 'distortion'. :)

One major difference is I don't care if people read my blog... for i write solely for myself, to express my thoughts and feelings, to vent what's trapped inside me. I 'run' so often partly because I want to keep my blog 'private'.

But i have made some very good and long term online friends along the way. They are the ones i don't mind reading my blog. Those who comment w/o identity, i simply ignore... for they mean nothing to me.

oops, saying too much now.

Elvina aka LaoNiang said...

J: I am glad you are here - and am happier that I managed to traumatize you haha. At least my blog has an effect on you - so keep you on your toes. But thanks for reading it really.

Bee: Ya, we are really quite different. I wouldn't say I "don't care" who reads my blog, because like you over time, there are some really sincere friends who stayed on despite everything. Saying don't care will sweep them all under this same category.

I use my blog as a channel for expression as well. What I don't care is whether people agree or don agree with what I write, because it's my blog. I Am What I Am.

As private as you want your blog to be, once it's one the world wide web, there isn't really much privacy is there? To be really private is to blog it in a Word Document and save it in your hard disk so that no one else can read it.

But thanks for reading my blog. And I do care about you. :)

Alright, time for Q & A session.

1) Why do you read my blog? How do you know about this blog?
Caused i would like to know what is happening around this blogger.
Got to know this blog from a goup where the owner posted some kelong trip info and i wanted to find our more about the kelong, hence i am here.

2) How often do you read it?
Once a day.

3) What motivates you to read it again?
Same like a serial drama, the urge to find out what happen next.

4) What kind of impression have you formed after reading it?
The owner really has a good command of English. A personal thought, a good novel or blog is not fully on language. But is the feel and plot to lure the reader to proceed reading.
You did well.

5) Has my blog influenced, affected, inspired, changed, traumatized, touched you in any way? If yes, how? If no, why not?
...

A complete Honest and Sincere Ans

I think you have had lots of wonderful responses and I can agree with almost all of them (except Bee's - ha ha you are definitely not my mirror ;-)

Know that you are blessed to be able to attract such wonderful people into your life.

This is for you:

Ode to Hotel Solace

There exists this simple girl, her name is Reena Tan,
She has a blog on the internet, to have a little fun.
The browsers come and read her posts, her soul she bares to us,
We read her every whim and thought, it's now our daily task.

Hotel Solace is the place to be, to relax and unwind,
Be charmed by her wicked innocence, her impish little mind.
We all know her by her pseudonym, a cute and funny name,
LaoNiang is what we know her by, and writing is her game.

So here's to a special girl, who's life has touched us all,
We hope her life would always be, an endless joyful ball.

LGSF: Wow you are indeed talented. I am humbled by your poem. It's beautiful. :)

Impish mind, wicked sense of humour huh? Sounds like me. Not a bad observation dude.

John: Hey thanks for dropping by Hotel Solace. Glad you like my writings. You are right...if there's nothing else about this blog that is interesting, at the very least, I am sincere.

And yes, I do love the open sea. Very much. Appeals to the romantic in me.

Bentan: Hey, thanks for dropping by. Maybe it's late - so I don't understand what you are trying to get at. But erm, thanks for the comments anyway. :)

1) Why do you read my blog? How do you know about this blog?

I came across your blog when I first your reply at Xishi's blog. I have to be honest, I was first attracted by the pretty lady in the picture and thought 'Wow! So pretty!', then as I read your blog, of some of the emotional thoughts you posted, I could feel your heart and emotions, cause often, I had similar experiences.

2) How often do you read it?

OK, I have to admit, I didn't read your blog everyday, but will sure check out for updates every alternate days of so.

3) What motivates you to read it again?

Hmm... Darkest secret in my heart... should I reveal? Haha... Not too sure, perhaps, I want to know you or understand you better? Then eventually, able to support, encourages and 'by your side' when you need someone to, cause wish you to know that, you need not, and will not be alone.

4) What kind of impression have you formed after reading it?

You are a intelliegance, witty, easily hurt, fun loving, thoughtful, beauty with a brain, the list goes on and on...

5) Has my blog influenced, affected, inspired, changed, traumatized, touched you in any way? If yes, how? If no, why not?

Like I said earlier, it was similiar experiences in life that I went through, that I could feel the same way as you do, thus, I hope I can provide you a lifting hand when you are down.

Writing takes me a tremendous effort but since my fav blogger asked...

Hotboyz kelong, somewhere I have always been wanting to go. I read a post on it @ FishingKaki.com by a "berrynnice" and was drawn here by the cute gal in intelligent-looking dark frames. With all due respect, little did I know that it is a whole lot more than that.

"Thou art is wise as thou art beautiful."

How often do I read it?? It's my morning staple, regular after-dinner special and night shift time-killer. Such is the perversion of my addiction to your blog, I homepage your blog on my internet browser. Too carried away?? Dun worry, just a figure of speech. Hehe..

They say writing is the act of faith, not a trick of grammer. I believe style takes the attitude of the mind. Not too many fancy words and absolute clarity is always a thumbs-up for me. Those words in a way, seems to come naturally, that's how the chapters you've penned appeals to me. Although I suspect that I could be under some kinda spell cast by your words and poems.

Your rhythem, Laoniang's style of writing and felicity of expression engages my senses totally. Life as stagnant as mine, I need to live vicariously thru others. hahaha... Hotel Solace ROX! :)

Hi Elvina,

There's no reason for every human behaviours...

Some may comes by chance and coincidence... Some may be cause by intentions...

1) Why do you read my blog? How do you know about this blog?

One point is that you are very real in your blog. Someone everyone can relate to.

I came upon your blog when reading some comments you posted on another blog- Xishi's blog if I remember correctly...

2) How often do you read it?

Once a while when I am free. No fix time.

3) What motivates you to read it again?

I like your style of blogging and there's an interactive feedback from the author to the reader in the comments page. People get to know you better and they also pleased that you read every single comments posted.

4) What kind of impression have you formed after reading it?

Ha ha... Impression is that you are who you say you are:-

Strong-willed, Sensitive, Sensual, Stubborn, Sensible, Solitude, Sense of humor, Sane (at times), Smart, Sarcastic, Superwoman, Sweet, Sassy :>

What I think really stand out is you are Smart, Sensual, Sensitive and have a great Sense of humor.

5) Has my blog influenced, affected, inspired, changed, traumatized, touched you in any way? If yes, how? If no, why not?

Every Blog tells a story, a reflection of the author- even though its what you call a "verbal diarrhoea". Yours is considered quite healthy- didn't get stomachache from reading... so don't worry.

Elvina aka LaoNiang said...

Jesse: Wow - perversion is a STRONG word. You write really well too I must say. Maybe you should start a blog too? If only my words can cast spells like you say.....
Then I shall make all of you hand over your money to me.

So - when you plan to make the trip up to HotBoys?

NJS: Well, I Am What I Am - so I do try my best to be as sincere as possible. I may not always be right - so I hope readers here will be discerning enough not to swallow whatever I say - hook, line and sinker.

1) Why do you read my blog? How do you know about this blog?
- I started reading sometime in September after you'd posted a comment on either A Babe in Toyland or BlinkyMummy. I still read the former regularly, but not the latter.

2) How often do you read it?
- Every weekday, checking a couple of times a day for updates.

3) What motivates you to read it again?
- Many of your posts resonate with me, and I especially like the methodical way you lay out and explain your thoughts.

4) What kind of impression have you formed after reading it?
- You are like the majority of my women friends who have been hurt in love but are still hopeful, although you wear your heart on your sleeve whilst most others don't.

5) Has my blog influenced, affected, inspired, changed, traumatized, touched you in any way? If yes, how? If no, why not?
- Your entries on the recent kelong experience inspired a couple of posts on my Blog about the BBC documentary on the SDU. This was the only time I have taken inspiration from another blog, thus far.

You have misquoted me, Elvina. You must be too tired.

I didn't say "I don't care who reads my blog". Precisely because I care who reads my blog, that's why my blog is always "moving" and I only inform those who really care about me of my blog movement.

I said "I don't care IF people read my blog"... meaning, I will write even if NO ONE reads.. cos I write it for myself. I won't lament that nobody reads it. But of course for those who care and do read, I really appreciate them very much.

Elvina said: "As private as you want your blog to be, once it's one the world wide web, there isn't really much privacy is there? To be really private is to blog it in a Word Document and save it in your hard disk so that no one else can read it."

Again this is one big difference we have... hehehe, I see more and more differences now. ;) I believe the web can still be PRIVATE depend on how you use it. The way you are using it will definitely fit into your belief that "there isn't really much privacy is there?". Surely no one I know can find my blog IF I CHOOSE not to disclose it to them, no matter how they search it. This I am very sure since I have moved my blog many times already.

Ok truthful answer you shall have:

1. Why do I read your blog?
Are you out of your mind ? You blog so I read lah. Simple as that.
I came here thru a link in FK forum.

2. How often do you read?
You see, I got a list of links to forum and a few blog site (I’m afraid the list is growing) book marked, so whenever I have time, I cycle thru the list.

3. What motivates you to read it again?
Well, I can’t read storybook openly at work so I read well-written articles in the net.
Ok, seriously, Command of language must be good but it is not the first priority else I will be reading “Laws book” online. Whatever written must be interesting / appealing to me.

4 What kind of impression have you formed after reading it?
Some of these are your perception of your encounter, so I cannot really comment on them. Everyone is unique in his/her own way about how he/she sees or feels. There is no right or wrong. So I cannot comment (or form impression) on your thought. However, I maybe draw to conclude about the personality who wrote these thoughts but then again I do not know if they had been “processed”. So for the moment, let me just say, well written and interesting blog, the blogger is hardworking and energetic (in producing blog).

5 Has my blog influenced, affected, inspired, changed, traumatized, touched you in any way? If yes, how? If no, why not?
Well, it keeps me amuse and entertain in the otherwise boring office hours. But please don’t write those thing that make me laugh out loud as I might lose my job you know?

NA said...

Wow. I did not know we have so many things in common.

I agree with many of your opinions. I have used your blog entry text as and when its appropriate. I filled in some tect in the midst of the quoted contents.

Then I end by attempting to answer your 5 Questions. =) Happy Reading!

-----------------------------------

Strong command of the language definitely helps - because I love to learn and muse at the different styles of good writing (I am thinking of gHoSt and AsTimeGoesBy now). But being a good writer is not enough to command my attention. The blogger must have its own brand of persona and attitude, a character that is distinctive in its own special way.

...................................

I feel very much for [some] people, and they are usually the main source of my inspiration. Being a blogger myself, I do feel a sense of unspoken affinity towards other fellow bloggers. (I cannot agree more. check out the recent entry that I put up regarding the Falcon's return). But again, this affinity is usually reserved for a selected few. Such exclusivity confers a kind of special status to these people that I hold high regard for. Simply because what they have written have either impressed me, touched me, or inspired me - in their own li'l ways.

That's just moi (and me too =) ).

Until more research (aka reading) is done, I shall not say more here. The worst thing that can happen to a blog reader is when he/she forms an impression b4 reading a blog and then either romanticize it or condemns it.

You miss the real thing if you cling on to illusions.

I may be easily contented, but I am not easily satisfied. Until I see the real [good] thing, I will not stop unless I have a good reason to do so.

Is this helpful, Elvina? =)

I honestly hope that Reflections-of-Kurakat can one day be added to the list of blogs worthy of your 'subscription.'

Cheers!

Hi, I have taken the liberty of quoting extensively from this wonderfully thoughtful blog entry of ours in my blog.

However, I have also introduce inputs into it as well as my comments that I have left here on yor blog.

If you deem that I should not do this, pls lemme know and I will remove the entry and try to come up with something else.

Thanks for sharing. I have a good impression of your blog after reading only 2 entries. Will read more when I can aford the time.

Have a nice day.

1) Why do you read my blog? How do you know about this blog?
Because you write interesting articles. Got the link from cowboy caleb.

2) How often do you read it?
Rarely

3) What motivates you to read it again?
Your insightful articles...and the matching quote at the end of it.

4) What kind of impression have you formed after reading it?
Your dark (blog) background and often pessimistic views on love. It makes people who never fell in love like me even more afraid.

5) Has my blog influenced, affected, inspired, changed, traumatized, touched you in any way? If yes, how? If no, why not?
Inspired, yes. You reinforced my view that women are complex creatures...worthy of more um...."in-depth" investigation :)
